In a social media world full of likes and comments, one photo reigns supreme- but it's probably not what you would expect.

It's not a famous celebrity, nor a cute puppy or baby that bears the title of most-liked Instagram photo of all-time. No...it's an egg.

A simple photograph of a brown, speckled egg with a plain white background has broken the record of the most-liked Instagram post ever with more than 20 million likes. The record was previously held by "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star Kylie Jenner, whose picture of her newborn daughter earned the reality star 18 million likes last year.

The social media phenomenon began on January 4, when an Instagram account with the handle world_record_egg_account posted the photo of the rather boring egg. The picture isn't what captivated Instagram users- it was the caption.

"Let's set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this." The caption was followed by a raised hand emoji and the hashtags #LikeTheEgg, #EggSoldiers, and #EggGang.

By Sunday, January 13, the photo had amassed more than 20 million likes- blowing out the former world record held by Jenner. The photo grew even more popular by Monday- earning over 30 million likes- after Jenner posted a video in response to the egg.

The video shows Jenner cracking an egg over a hot sidewalk in an attempt to cook it. "Take that little egg," read the caption.

Jenner's February 6 post of daughter, Stormi Webster, might be giving the egg a run for its money. The photo- which shows the newborn's tiny hand wrapped around Jenner's finger- has begun earning more likes and comments since the egg picture took over the world record. As of Monday, January 14, the post had nearly 18.5 million likes and nearly 2 million comments- many of which included egg emojis.

Other contenders for the most-liked Instagram post of all-time include ones from similar accounts such as world_record_chicken and world_record_lettuce. Celebrity accounts that have held the world record in the past include Beyonce- 11.3 million likes for her 2017 pregnancy announcement, Justin Bieber- 13.3 million likes for his 2018 engagement announcement, and Ariana Grande- 12.8 million likes for her 2018 tribute to ex-boyfriend Mac Miller who died from a drug overdose in September.
